Located on the pristine waters of Charlotte Harbor is Port Charlotte, Florida. Just north of Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte is one of Florida’s best-kept secrets. Minutes away from Englewood beach and in close driving distance to both Sarasota and Fort Myers, Port Charlotte Fla is quite literally the perfect centrally located town on Florida’s Gulf Coast. With a population of roughly 50,000, Port Charlotte is still growing, however residents here enjoy a slower paced way of life. The median age of Port Charlotte’s residents is 49, making this an ideal setting for retirees, young families and winter residents alike.
Besides being in one of the best locations in the state, Port Charlotte also has a fabulous market for real estate. Still a fairly new town, most of the homes here are also either brand new or relatively new, many of which are on waterfront properties with lush tropical landscaping. Saltwater canals also run throughout most of the city, making waterfront homes abundant. These canals lead you to Charlotte Harbor and from there, the sparkling blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Port Charlotte is a planned community and for the most part is mainly residential. Homes here are still fairly priced and offer some of the best bang for your real estate buck on the west coast. However, in the last few years property values have doubled and almost tripled in some areas, making this a great location for your next investment property.
Port Charlotte itself is still a growing community, but it has all of the amenities of big city living like a baseball field, shopping mall and other fine dining and shopping opportunities. It is said that, contrary to popular belief, American history as we know it began in Charlotte County. Way before the pilgrims ever landed on Plymouth Rock, explorer Ponce de Leon was said to have landed in Charlotte Harbor and started a colony around 1521. They even got so far as to build a church and a fort, but six weeks after they landed, they were attacked by Calusa Indians. Ponce de Leon was struck in the leg by an arrow during the attack and gangrene set into his wound. Ponce de Leon and his men fled to Havana where he later died due to his wound. While there is no archeological proof of this happening as of yet, this theory is recognized by historians as being the true beginnings of America. Today, nothing is left of Ponce de Leon in Port Charlotte, though its pristine beaches and wildlife probably look similar to what he saw here 500 years ago.
